The Valletta Marathon: A Journey Through Time

In a short period, the Valletta Marathon has become a must-attend event in Malta. Don’t confuse it with the other historic marathon on the island, which is named the Malta Marathon. This marathon started in 2022 thanks to Matthew Pace, Charlie Demanuele, and Fabio Spiteri, Maltese entrepreneurs and triathletes. The main idea behind creating this race was to combine the island’s ideal climate, its easy access to mainland Europe, and its rich history. The route takes runners along the fortifications of Fort Saint-Elmo and Fort Saint Angelo, ancient sentinels of the past, offering impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea. Starting from the Sliema waterfront and finishing at the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa, it offers marathoners a journey through 7,000 years of history.

Valletta, Malta’s capital, is an open-air museum. During the Middle Ages, the Knights of St. John, also known as the Hospitallers Knights, settled in Malta. Their heritage remains visible today in the imposing fortifications of Valletta.

The Grandmaster’s Palace, St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the fortified walls of the city offer a glimpse into the historical past of the archipelago.
